Sora & Chill
Inside Sora & Chill: Pete Frogs on Reimagining Kingdom Hearts
Sora & Chill is a musical tribute to the music of Kingdom Hearts from composer, guitarist, and producer Pete Frogs. Anchored by tracks like “Face My Fears,” the album captures the full emotional range of one of gaming’s most beloved series, from quiet introspection to sweeping, cinematic energy.
For Pete, the connection to video game music runs deep; “I’ve been an avid gamer from a very young age, and I actually learned my first instrument, the keyboard, because I wanted to play the Final Fantasy OSTs.”
That early spark evolved into a career. Active as a game composer since 2021 and a producer since 2017, Pete’s work blends electronic elements, retro synthesizers, and live instrumentation, reshaping familiar music while preserving their emotional core.
Pete Frogs is known for his his album Sonic & Chill 2 and his genre-bending releases Genesis Jams and Genesis Jams 2.
Why Kingdom Hearts?
When it came time to build Sora & Chill, Kingdom Hearts was a natural choice; not just musically, but personally. “I’ll always have fond memories of playing the Kingdom Hearts games. Came for the Action RPG epic battles, stayed for the unforgettable characters, the immaculate vibes, and of course, the music.”
That sense of attachment is what drives the album’s direction. Kingdom Hearts is known for its emotional contrast; lightness and intensity existing side by side. “For games that could be so light-hearted at times, they had absolutely no business landing the emotional gut punches I remember them for.”
That duality shaped the entire project. Rather than focusing on a single tone, Pete set out to capture the full experience. “Emotionally speaking, the album has a lot of range… both the highs and the lows.”
At its core, though, the album is held together by something more subtle: “A certain sense of childlike innocence, vulnerability, and wonder.”
Reinterpreting “Face My Fears”
As one of the defining themes of the modern Kingdom Hearts era, “Face My Fears” plays a key role on the album. “Covering the theme songs for all three games in the main series… really was a no-brainer.”
Originally a collaboration between Hikaru Utada and Skrillex, the track presented a unique opportunity to reinterpret a vocal-driven composition. “When doing a cover of a song as an instrumental, it’s important to place a lot of care on the vocal melody.”
Pete approached that challenge through instrumentation: “I decided to have it played by bells for the verses… and a guitar in the chorus. I like the contrast and expressivity that provided.”
A Composer’s Approach
While Sora & Chill fits within the modern landscape of reinterpretation projects, its foundation is deeply compositional.
“I stayed very close to the melodies and chords of the original compositions; what I brought to the table had a lot to do with the choice of instruments, the musical textures, the rhythms, and grooves.”
As a multi-instrumentalist, Pete treats each track as a complete musical system, shaping tone, texture, and movement to support the emotional intent.
Collaboration and Craft
The album also brings in collaborators from across the GameChops ecosystem. “You can hear Helynt’s electric and acoustic guitars on ‘Traverse in Trance’, and Coffee Date’s vocals and violin on ‘Sanctuary’.”
It’s a project built not just on reinterpretation, but on shared musical language and trust between artists.
A Defining Project
Sora & Chill represents Pete Frogs’ most ambitious release with GameChops to date.
“Clocking in at 18 tracks, this is the biggest project I’ve done with GameChops so far.”
The goal was clear from the start: “I wanted to offer a selection that felt definitive and encapsulated everything I love most about the music of the games: the sense of adventure and exploration, the dramatic theme songs, and, of course, the wistful character themes.”
That sense of completeness extends beyond the music itself. “I cannot thank Yoko Shimomura enough for imbuing these game worlds with so much life and soul, and for being such an inspiration for my work as a game composer.”
And behind the scenes, the project reflects a broader creative effort: “I would like to personally thank Nathalie De Biasi for her support and unparalleled expertise on Kingdom Hearts lore; Camille Gicquel, for her vision and beautiful illustrations; and my musical collaborators Coffee Date and Helynt, for their advice and generous performances
Closing Thoughts
Sora & Chill is ultimately about reconnecting with the moments that made Kingdom Hearts unforgettable: the quiet ones, the emotional ones, and everything in between.
“Thank you for listening. Whether you’re a newcomer to the series or a die-hard fan, I hope some of the magic I felt while playing Kingdom Hearts will find its way to you.”
